Dear See’s Family,

As we continue to manage through these unprecedented times, the health and safety of our employees and customers remains our top priority. As a See’s customer, you know we’re focused on making the best candy possible and caring for our customers. One of the best ways we can do that is to make all the necessary improvements to ensure we’re living up to your expectations in every aspect of how See’s operates.

“Quality Without Compromise” is our longstanding motto, and that stands true now more than ever. See’s has always believed in delivering the freshest, most delicious candy possible, in the best way we know how. Because we make pretty much everything we sell, we have two really important workplaces to get right—our manufacturing and packing facilities and our retail shops. Because we won’t cut corners, and because our employees are like family, we meticulously worked through every step in the process to make sure we’re safe before we’ll reinitiate production or open shops.

We are excited to share that we have recently reopened our San Francisco and Los Angeles candy kitchens. While this means we are now able to safely make our candies, you can almost say we are starting from scratch. Your tried and true favorites may not be available immediately, but the recipes and care we put in to making every piece is exactly the same. Please don’t despair... while these adjustments are necessary as we slowly reopen, we have not discontinued any items. We may not have everything in stock, but this is a great time to try a new flavor and explore our assortment. (Trust us, they’re all great!)

In addition to making candy again, we launched a convenient way to shop with contact free pick up we call Click... Pick... & Go! Currently, at select locations, you can order online and pick up at a participating shop. We have designated pick up areas located just outside the store that supports safe social distancing for you and your favorite See’s employees. We will continue to roll this out to more locations, and our goal is to open Click... Pick... & Go! in as many locations as possible. Please visit pickup.sees.com to see if there is a location near you.

If your local shop isn’t offering pick up service, we ask for your patience as we are working hard to make fresh candy and get our associates back into our reconfigured shops. In the meantime, our website will continue to offer shipping promotions throughout the summer. Delivering delicious chocolate in the warmer weather takes extra care and packaging, including ice packs and insulation, to ensure that your candy arrives at your doorstep exactly as you have come to expect from See’s. Those additional measures do add weight and cost to packages, but we are continuing to find ways to provide even more promotions this year, and to give you opportunities to try products that may be shipped without the additional packaging and cost.

When I started with See’s I set a goal to get to each and every store, which is nearly 250. Before this event changed our lives, I was able to visit just over 200 in a little over a year, and I enjoyed every one. I was able to support the best team in retail, talk with great customers and taste (devour) the most delicious candy you can find anywhere. I learned many things on that journey, but the most important lessons were: you want your See’s Candies, and you also want to see our smiling and fantastic team.

We appreciate your patience as we re-start this grand business so we can serve you even better in the years to come. We hope to either delight you by bringing joy to your doorstep or by seeing you pick up your treats at one of our stores.

Dear See’s Family,

In these uncertain times, See’s is focused on taking care of our people and being of service to our communities. We wanted to provide you an update on when we will resume operations and the work we have been doing behind the scenes to operate safely in the meantime.

True to See’s—Being a part of an organization that is nearly 100 means that a lot of good decisions were made long before you ever showed up. Smart people wrote and lived by our motto: “Quality Without Compromise”—and, we still mean it as much as ever.

And so, because we have made the decision to be cautious and honor both our employees to stay home, and government officials who directed us to only go out if necessary, this chapter in See’s history has meant that we have been closed for the longest period in our history. The closure happened during a major holiday, Easter, for you and your family. We are working hard to be safe, so we don’t have to miss another one.

Easter Giving and Joy—Over the last few weeks, we have been able to contribute product across the West to hospitals, schools, food banks, missions and great organizations like Meals on Wheels, Ronald McDonald Houses and the YMCA, as well as hospital workers and first responders. In every case, we get pictures, notes, and phone calls from people who are joyful, sometimes in tears, and always thankful for what we have been able to do. Through the support of many volunteers, we have given over 100 tons of delicious, American-made candy!

While we aren’t alone in not having answers, I am pleased to say we have a better sense of where we are going. Since March, we have reconfigured how we make and sell candy. Our production floors have fewer people making and packing our candy with care. We have taken the past few weeks to review all of our operations and ensure we can work safely in all aspects of our business.

Opening, But Slowly—The majority of our shops are still closed, but we have tested opening a few with minimal hours as we retrain for safety. You will still hear a cheerful “Welcome to See’s!” but customers now pick up candy at a safe distance and see the smiling eyes of our associates over the masks we now wear. It may be different, but we are as thrilled to see you, as you are to see us.

Shortly after we send this letter, we intend to resume selling through www.sees.com. Because we only make fresh product, and we have limited supplies, we ask for your patience as we ramp back up. After not being able to support your Easter traditions, we want to be there for you for Mother’s Day, birthdays, cravings days, and every day in between. Keep an eye out for a follow-up email from us.

Back to the Start—The first See’s shop opened on Western Avenue in Los Angeles, in 1921. The very next year, we sent out our first catalog. So while home delivery is new for some, See’s has been taking and delivering orders through the US Mail since the beginning. Never one to be left behind, See’s took our first online order in 1998.

These materials aren’t just artifacts, they tell the story of a company that has always been guided by core principles. Earlier this month, I read the words of Mary See printed in one of our first catalogs in the 1920s:

You’ll find See’s Famous Candies as nearly perfect—in richness of flavor, in purity and in wholesomeness—as it is humanly possible to make them. They will delight you.

Of all I have seen that tells our history, this paragraph is among the best in summarizing what it is like to work for a company that simply will not compromise.

We hope you and your loved ones are well, and we hope to see you in a shop later this year or to serve you through sees.com in the coming weeks.

Dear See’s Customers,

See’s turns 99 this year, and we are proud of our legacy. That legacy includes our employees, our customers and our longstanding mantra of Quality Without Compromise. Those years provide a proven track record, that is longer than most, of operating safely, providing a great product and having a fantastic workforce with years of dedication to you, our customers.

Current events around COVID-19 have been a top priority for all aspects of See’s operations. See’s Candies are American-made in San Francisco and Los Angeles, so the impacts to you—our customers—and our employees are very real. Many of us have never experienced an event like this, and all of us are watching the news and talking with others with genuine concern and questions. We are all anxious and looking for that ray of light around the corner.

Since the beginning, we have been following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and direction from federal, state and local authorities. We have been providing daily updates to supervisors and our frontline workforce, and have adjusted operations to address any of our employees who may be in a vulnerable condition or who are simply concerned about loved ones. See’s takes great care, always, in providing a safe product and a safe working environment for our employees.

Our plants, distribution centers and retail shops are permitted and regularly reviewed by public health authorities. All retail associates are certified food handlers, and use best practices for food handling, avoiding direct contact with food and always adhering to policies regarding staying home if sick or compromised.

Recognizing the growing and important concern in response to COVID-19, we have taken additional steps to ensure customer safety that include moving to wrapped samples of our product, practicing social distancing with our employees and customers, and enhanced facility cleaning in addition to our daily and rigorous sanitation practices in plants and shops. We immediately recognized the Public Health Order of the six Bay Area counties and took steps last night to close all 40 locations subject to that direction in the impacted areas.

I want to recognize the genuine concern and caring for our employees and customers here at our home base in the Bay Area, as well Pasadena and greater Los Angeles, which is where Mary See and her son Charles founded this great company in 1921. We are a strong example of an American company that has always focused on the right things and managed to move forward and grow because we have always taken care of our employees, shown great care for our product, and done right by our customers.

We know in times like this, candy is something we turn to for comfort, and we are happy to serve you in the shops that do remain open for business at this time, as well as online through our website. I get the benefit every day of seeing with my own eyes the dedication our employees have to our customers, and I know how much our customers look to us for joy and support. We know things are changing quickly, and we will continue to provide updates as we move forward through the coming weeks. We ask you to be patient with us, with our employees and with each other, as we work through this.

Since it is St. Patrick’s Day, I’ll end with the note I placed in our See’s catalog for this season: “‘May the road rise to meet you.’ So begins one of my favorite Irish sayings. At See’s, we make sure that road leads to the best candy you can find.” Our thoughts are with all of you affected by this event and particularly those directly impacted by the illness, and we hope you and yours stay well.

Dear See’s Customers,

In recognition of the impacts of the coronavirus, the direction provided by government officials at every level, and the concern of our customers and employees, we have temporarily closed all of our retail operations open to the public. This means that the near century of uninterrupted direct sale of See’s candy has now been paused.

Because See’s has been in business for 99 years, we have a unique history. We started in 1921, and with one exception, we have been in continuous operation. Our incredible associates have been providing the best service to customers since we opened our first shop in Pasadena, California. We have been packing and mailing chocolate and peanut brittle to our customers for 98 years which is long before the internet and daily deliveries to our homes.

The one exception of our continuous retail operation was during WW II. Because we would not compromise on the quality of our ingredients, and because agricultural products were in short supply, See’s only made what we could with the supplies on hand. We would only open shops when we had product, and we closed once it was sold out.

WWII Rationing

During the war, many raw ingredients such as butter, sugar and cream were rationed and in extremely short supply. There were heated discussions within the company as to how See’s could stay in business without compromising on the quality of the recipes. In the end, they took a risk on a clever idea: using the best ingredients, but producing less candy. When a shop ran out after a few hours of sales, the shop closed for the day. The plan worked—customers were willing to wait in long lines to buy their candy from See’s, knowing that the company had kept their promise of quality.

Many of you would say candy is essential. Some would say it is comfort food, and we agree with all of you. We know you are devoted and want your favorites, maybe now more than ever. However, it is critical that we recognize the seriousness of this situation, and we do all we can to protect one another.

Our shops have closed, and for all other parts of our business we are taking extreme measures to protect employees. The new normal is social distancing to avoid close contact with others. We currently require 7 feet of separation at all times, for all employees. This exceeds the recommended distancing from the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We are setting visual and physical boundaries as well as monitoring all activities to ensure this separation is not just stated, but strictly followed.

If you know our brand, you know our motto, “Quality Without Compromise.” Those three words mean that See’s aims to exceed every industry standard at all times.

We will work hard every day to ensure that when we are able to reopen our shops, we will have uncompromising clarity and have taken every step needed to achieve the safety of our employees and customers. For now, we simply have to ask for your patience and understanding.

Our hearts go out to those affected by this illness. Stay safe and be well.

Dear See’s Customers,

We are grateful for your continued support and loyalty during these challenging times. Quality Without Compromise and providing unparalleled customer service has been our North Star for the past 99 years.

We know that you expect the very best from us, and we realize how disappointing it is that we are not able to deliver some of your favorite candies during a time that we all need comfort from a familiar friend. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and understand that for many of you See’s is an Easter tradition that will be missed this year.

We are committed to the health and safety of our employees, and respect the direction from California authorities, where we make and ship all of our product, to focus on staying home, staying healthy and ensuring we are all taking care of one another.

We feel it is critical to honor and prioritize those values even above what we love most, delighting you with the best candy you can find anywhere. Even during Easter (a very consequential time for our business) and even though we had already made all of our holiday product, we’ve chosen the health of our employees and supporting safe communities first.

I am particularly saddened that the hard work from our talented artisans who decorate our eggs, and the many wonderful treats that our See’s team delights in providing to you, won’t make it to your tables and baskets this year. That means that we know we are letting many of you down. When we do resume operations, we will be even more committed than ever to providing you with the freshest and best candy on the planet, paired with our exceptional service.

As a part of our core values, we feel strongly that it is important to support workers on the front line and those in need. We are finding ways to give back to our communities by donating candy to local organizations like the YMCA and Meals on Wheels here at our headquarters as well as other communities with a See’s store. In addition, we continue to contribute candy to food banks, hospital staff and first responder organizations. We encourage everyone to find a way to reach out and support those in need and those who are helping all of us.

We are honored to be part of your sweet traditions, and our entire See’s family is working hard to make sure our employees are safe and focused on the best path forward. Please make no mistake—See’s isn’t going anywhere. We’ve been around for nearly a century, and we can’t wait to serve you for another 100 years. Like you, we recognize that this situation requires our serious attention, and in our case that means taking a pause to review and make changes to our daily business, and in turn depriving you of your favorite candies. We truly appreciate your continued patience and understanding throughout this time.

Wishing you a Sweet and Happy Easter,

Dear See’s Family,

2020 needs more good news—and here’s some from See’s: We are back! I am happy to announce that as of this week, every See’s shop that can be open, is. Less than 10% of our stores are in mall locations where the mall itself is not open, but every other See’s shop is operating for pick up service at the least.

See’s is, in my view and the view of many of you, essential. You need joy, and we provide it. We have truly appreciated your patience and the words of concern, care, and now, happiness, as we’ve taken time to prepare and adjust to the safe operation of our stores. I said early on that we will not trade employee health for sales, and we’ve kept to that.

Most of our locations are currently open for pick up service only, but we are starting to bring customers inside a limited number of shops and plan to add more each week. It has been a pleasure to work in our shops again and do what we do best—provide great customer service and bring you fresh, American-made delicious candy.

Chocolates Image
Quality Without Compromise remains our motto. It guides all we do, from how we make our candy with the freshest ingredients, to the way we put our valued employees and customers first. As we are working to re-open, we are keeping a keen eye on and carefully following all state and local regulations. Before each shop opens for walk-in business, we send a management team to measure every aspect of the store and to retrain our associates to operate in this new environment. We’ve added new measures, like plexiglass and fun signage and floor decals to protect you and our hard-working teams. We require employees and customers to wear masks and limit the number of candy lovers who can enter at one time.

Our goal is to keep you and our employees safe while delivering the outstanding customer service you expect from See’s.

If coming in the store doesn’t suit you, we have you covered. You can go online to pickup.sees.com, select your closest shop, browse your favorites, and then place an order through Click → Pick → Go! for contact-free pick up. We are also taking shop pick up orders by phone and offering online delivery through sees.com to satisfy all your candy cravings.

It is inspiring to see how hard our teams have worked in our kitchens and in every part of the business to make the candy that has made See’s famous and get it back in shops. As President and CEO, I am very fortunate to work with our committed and talented team who are looking out for one another, operating safely, and getting us back to what we do every day.

Finally, at See’s, giving back is important to us. To thank our customers and communities, we started donating candy at the onset of the crisis. One of the things we are most proud of is that our candy is made fresh, and we don’t add preservatives. So, faced with the choice of throwing candy away because stores were closed in March, we mobilized to identify organizations that could put our wonderful product to use.

We’ve donated hundreds of thousands of pounds of See’s candy to nearly 250 organizations throughout the west. Nearly one million people have received a See’s treat through a food bank or from a charitable organization, hospital, or school to which we’ve delivered candy. Kids and families, front line health care workers and first responders, and people in need of a smile have received our product and they’ve told us how much they appreciate it. The thanks on social media and in the letters I get to read are heartfelt and moving. It is an honor to serve so many who make a difference in our communities, and we will continue to support organizations that can use a smile.

Thank you for your patience and continued support as we’ve gotten through this difficult time. We are excited to put on our masks, wear the See’s name proudly, and get back to the business of providing you with the best candy you can find anywhere.

It’s good to be back.

All the best,
